The bolide explosion of February 15, 2013 did not bring down buildings: it blew out windows. By March 5, the count stood at more than 7,200 damaged buildings — 6,040 residential blocks, 718 schools and universities, 293 medical facilities — with 1,491 people seeking medical attention and about 33 million dollars in damage. Repairs were carried out with −15 °C outside, and the priority the authorities declared was clear: protect the district heating pipes before anything else, because if they froze, the damage would multiply. By March 5, only about 1.5% of the affected buildings were still unrepaired, and the state covered the replacement of home windows.
What to learn from this: The shockwave breaks glass, and broken glass in winter is a heating problem, not a cosmetic one. Two practical things: in a distant explosion the danger is the window, so get away from it and don't go look out; and have something to cover an opening with — heavy plastic, tape, plywood — because for the first 48 hours nobody will have glass to spare.
